WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: late

Weather conditions:

The timing of spring was normal. Summer was wet and cold, with frequent snows and, judging by the dates of natural processes, was rather late.

Season temperature: cold
Season humidity: rainy
Date of 50% snow-cover:
Date of ice-break on rivers:
Date of final loss of snow:

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Arctic Fox and Snowy Owl Nyctea scandiaca were common everywhere (two to three Arctic Foxes were observed on each 10 km survey route), although they did not breed. Skuas, especially Pomarine Stercorarius pomarinus and Long-tailed S. longicaudus, were numerous at the extreme southwest and at the north of Novaya Zemlya, as well as in some localities along the western coast. Breeding behaviour was recorded in Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula, Turnstone, and Purple Sandpiper Calidris maritima at the south of the southern island. Reproduction of waders in many localities was almost completely unsuccessful. The low species diversity and abundance of waders, in comparison with the 1988 and 1990 breeding seasons, was striking at the south of Novaya Zemlya.

Rodent dynamics:

Lemming populations were at a low point: only one Siberian Lemming Lemmus sibiricus was recorded at Krestovaya Bay at the south of the northern island.
